This hidden treasure is approximately 17 miles—as the crow flies—from Keswick, and sits in stunning surroundings crowned by the majestic Ridge.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOnce known as Deerhead, according to the Domesday book, the area came to prominence with the arrival of John Hugh Asher in 1742. Asher was a woodsman of ambition who drastically transformed the town’s fortunes until a tragic accident, in 1761, claimed his life. His legacy lives on in the town’s name, as well as the eponymous Ridge from which he fell.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn 2026 the town is a popular tourist destination. Visitors range from wealthy members of a local sailing club, to backpackers and thrill seekers who explore the surrounding woods, caves, and hills.
