Description
January is a postcard writing game for two, printed in postcard book format, about distant but persistent friendships in an alternate universe filled with kaiju. It’s about living ordinary lives in the face of impending horrors, and small friendships tended for decades. This is a game about people who are the protagonists of only their own lives – the bit characters in larger world-ending stories who still live tenderly and completely when the world is in entropic decline.
Story and Art:
The first kaiju makes landfall in 1955. Two artists meet when they are both 18, but are separated and promise to write each other. They do not see each other again. The game checks in on these artists every five years, as they write postcards to each other, grow older, and continue living life in a world besieged by giant monsters.
The art in this book is a visual narrative of how the two player characters, both artists, communicate with each other over decades of shared experiences and inspirations. One set of postcards is painted by game designer Shing Yin Khor and the other set features collages by illustrator Jared Andrew Schorr, for a total of twenty postcards (ten postcards for each player).
Playing the Game:
The book includes everything two players need to play the game, as the postcard book format allows the book to be easily split into multiple pieces. Each player is given one set of prompts and postcards, and the primary mechanic is players writing and mailing postcards to each other.
The game is intended to be moderated by the passage of time; the specific timing of the game can vary based on player preferences.
